I have read almost all of the Shardlake books, but this one is one of my favourites. Come to think of it, I am not sure why, but I think it was because CJ Sansome introduced a new character that I really liked who ends up being Shardlake's side kick. I also found the intrigue and suspense in this book exciting and was worried for the characters - which is why, let's face it, we read fiction. To worry about the fictional people. To be involved in their complex lives. To stay up all night until the story unfolds ...
